Do you ever find yourself feeling as though it is just you in the conversation? Whether it is a friend, family member or spouse that is looking directly at you but not really listening to you? You might be venting or sharing your day or an event that took place and yet in their eyes, they are not actively listening? We’ve all been there and we’ve all done that in return to our loved ones. Guity as charged. We all have so much on our minds and we tend to try to be a good listener when someone is having a conversation with you but we end up not being in the present and instead end up asking that person to repeat what they just said. Now if that isn’t a slap in the face. Put your cell phone face down and turn down the volume. Turn off the TV (don’t mute or you’ll be tempted to look) let there be no interruptions and give that person direct eye contact and your full attention. Don’t be looking at the time either. Be alert and mindful of how your body language speaks to that person. Folding arms or looking with discontentment is a good way to shut that person down in a heartbeat.
When you find yourself frustrated or hurting and there is no one around at that time and you want to really be heard, go to a quiet place and speak to God. He is with you everywhere you go and it doesn’t matter if it’s in the closet, bathroom or car HE IS THERE. Spill out your heart and give all the hurt and anger to God. Ask for help and guidance on how to deal with the situation. If you can call someone then do so if it is urgent and you feel yourself panicking. But still, make it a point to pray and ask for the Lord’s direction.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 ESV
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” Deuteronomy 31:6.
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 ESV
We are all human and we tend to be so wrapped up in the busy hustle of everyday life that we don’t slow ourselves down to be available to others. I like to listen to quiet music when driving or nothing at all but silence in the car. Maybe that is something to think about the next time you’re in that situation whether you are being called upon to listen to a loved one’s day or if you yourself need to be heard at that exact moment. God has all the time in the world. Take deep breaths and just talk openly to Him.
You are a shield around me, O Lord, my Glorious One, who lifts up my head. To the Lord, I cry aloud and He answers me from His holy hill. I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear … Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God! Psalm 3-7 NIV
